- 26.8% - Toyota Market Share
- 12 840 - Total Units Sold
- 7 348 - Total Passenger
- 5 179 - Total LCV
- 3 373 – Hilux Best Seller
“We are extremely happy with the July sales, and this is once again as a result of a consolidated effort by Toyota, Lexus and Hino dealers, Toyota South Africa staff as well as our brand ambassadors – the customers. While selling well over 12 000 units is a feat on its own, the fact that we achieved this in tough economic times is testament of how resilient the South African market is,” says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.
Passenger sales have also shot up to 7 348 – a notable increase of 1 455 units compared to the month of June (5 893). Strong SUV sales by segment leaders Fortuner (1 006) and RAV4 (949) as well as new entrant Rush (494) contributed meaningfully to the Passenger category. Toyota luxury SUVs Land Cruiser 200 and Prado recorded sales of 85 and 84, respectively, while niche SUVs Lexus NX (25), RX (10) and LX (16) also continued to fare well.
Not to be left out, traditional low-riders – including Corolla Quest (1 405), Yaris (974) and Etios (830) – also staked sizeable claims to put Toyota atop in passenger sales in the month of July.
However, it was the Hilux in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment that found more homes than any other nameplate in South Africa last month. With a total of 3 373 units sold, Hilux contributed more than half the size of Toyota sales in the LCV segment. Also showing strongly was Quantum with 1 460 units as well as Land Cruiser Pick-Up with 238 units. Hilux is by far SA’s best-selling nameplate year-to-date, having amassed a total of 23 215 units while its nearest competitor is some 5 637 units adrift.
From the truck front, the Hino 300 Series had yet another strong performance in the Medium Commercial (MCV) segment with a share of 24.7%, while the Hino 500 Series ended the month with an 18.6% share of the (Heavy Commercial Vehicles) HCVs.
“With a total market share of 26.8% in July, we are truly proud of our Dealer Network and can only encourage them to continue creating customer smiles and never to be complacent. We would also like to express a big thank you to fleet owners and car rental companies for their continued support and loyalty. The introduction of new, value-for-money vehicles such as Rush can only bode well for the stagnating local economy – we are happy that the market seems to be embracing it as it sold close to 500 units in the month of its debut, ” says Hamman.
